Peter Finch is a Contributing Editor at Golf Digest. He joined the magazine, published by Conde Nast, as a Senior Editor in February 2003. In the fall of 2014, he also became a lecturer in the University of Tennessee's Department of Journalism and Electronic Media. Finch taught JEM 415: the Magazine Workshop, which creates the student-led publication Scoop. He won the College of Communication & Information's 2015 Lecturer Award.
Among his projects at Golf Digest: overseeing the spinoffs Golf Digest Index (aimed at the magazine’s most affluent readers) and Golf Digest STIX (a weekly digital-only magazine for golf-equipment junkies). In 2012, Finch began a monthly column on golf and business. In 2014 he led an effort to redesign and reenergize the Golf Digest front-of-book sections. The new look debuted with the June 2014 issue.
Several articles by Finch have won Golf Writers of America Association awards. His “Buddies” package from December 2004—a collection of stories and photographs about friends playing golf in Scotland and elsewhere—was a finalist for a 2005 National Magazine Award, presented by the American Society of Magazine Editors.
Finch, who has a bachelor’s degree in communication from Stanford University, is active in the National Magazine Awards program, often serving as an awards judge.
Finch was previously editor of SmartMoney. He started at the magazine—a Hearst Corp. and Dow Jones joint venture—as articles editor in 1992, was named executive editor in 1995 and became editor in 1999. SmartMoney was among the youngest magazines ever to be named “Magazine of the Year” by Advertising Age and won National Magazine Awards for personal service journalism in 1995 and 1996. It was a National Magazine Award finalist 11 times during his tenure there.
From 1987-1992 Finch served as a writer and editor at BusinessWeek. Among his responsibilities: overseeing the magazine’s People (profiles) and The Corporation (corporate strategies) sections.
Finch is also author, with Delia Marshall, of “How to Raise Kids Without Going Broke” (Avon Books, 1999) and, with Nellie Huang, “The SmartMoney Stockpicker’s Bible” and “The SmartMoney Guide to Long-Term Investing” (John Wiley & Sons, 2002).
